Konnichwa! I worked in Kyoto for four years and spent numerous summers thereafter walking the ancient streets, always eager to explore a city I came to know so well. But if you were to visit Kyoto – arguably one of Japan’s most popular destinations thanks to its status as a former capital of Japan; its famed Gion where geisha (Japanese for “Artist”) still do roam the streets on their way to training or work; and the hundreds of temples found throughout the city – what would it smell like?
Let me take you on a fragrant, and somewhat surprising, journey through one of my favorite places on earth.
Let’s start at the unexpectedly modern JR Kyoto Station, most certainly a shock to those arriving for the first time immediately hoping for a touch of antiquity.
Your first olfactory experience might be the aroma of a freshly baked creme puff (chou pastry) from Beard Papa, or perhaps the aroma of fragrances from the large Isetan department store at the west end of the station….
