New York Times: Good News for the Subway, Underarm Candy

The trend is partly inspired by the success of products like AXE, the male deodorant, shower gel and body spray introduced by Unilever to the United States in 2002, said Marlen Elliot Harrison, the editor of PerfumeCritic.com, an online magazine.

Mr. Harrison also cited “the growing diversity of scented products across all markets” — laundry detergents, hand soaps — “and the expansion of the fragrance industry in general as evidenced by the growing number of yearly fragrance launches.”

“We’re also seeing the evolution of scent wardrobes with people using various scents to suit moods, weather, outfits,” he said.
